About the Book
Harry Potter's family (The Dursleys) have been horrible since he returned home for the summer from Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry cannot wait to return for next turn, despite the strange warning from an impish creature who tries to warn Harry to stay away. After an eventful journey back to Hogwarts, Harry's second year doesn't calm down. Harry must navigate a new professor, a ghost who haunts the girls' bathroom, and of course, his rival, Draco Malfoy... all while someone is turning Hogwarts students to stone.
Quick Review (Spoiler Free)
I have been thoroughly enjoying this full cast audio series. I couldn't remember how different this book really was compared to the movies. As I listened I kept finding myself like "oh yeah!" and proceeded to tell my husband in excitement. The voices are all so good. Moaning Myrtle's narrator was probably my favorite of some of the side characters.
Now, let's get into the details!!
I mentioned the review of Sorcerer's stone that I began reading these books when I was in high school and I watched all of the movies as they came out. Re-reading them now reminded me that I really forgot a lot of the smaller details. This only makes me more excited for the HBO remake of the series because I'm hoping they can include some of these details that I forgot.
Here are some of the things I forgot about that are different between the movie and book:
When Dobby Disapparates there is a loud crack sound vs. silence in the movie.
When the pudding (not cake) is dropped in the scene with the Mason's is it in the kitchen and explodes on Harry. What caused the Mason's to leave abruptly was actually an owl swooping through the house, which Mrs. Mason is terrified of.
Harry is accused of using the Hover charm from the pudding incident by the Ministry of Magic. This is how the Dursley's learn that Harry isn't supposed to use magic outside of school.
Harry's belonging were locked in the cupboard under the stairs. Harry was moved into one of Dudley's rooms in book one. Fred and George had to help Harry break in and get his stuff.
Harry almost forgot Hedwig during the rescue by the Weasleys.
The de-gnoming scene after the Weasleys get back home.
Arthur Weasley and Lucius Malfoy get into a fight in Flourish and Blotts.
The journey to Hogwarts in the family car is rather boring in the book with them being completely bored vs. the train scene that happens in the movie.
Gilderoy is much more obnoxious in the book and even suggests that Harry is giving out autographs because of fame and lectures him. He also makes him late for class.
Herbology class is with Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. Slytherin wasn't present like they were in the movie.
The Howler was much scarier in the book.
Peeves is the one who finds Harry near Justin when he is petrified.
Gilderoy gives a pop quiz about himself. Hermione scores the highest, of course.
Harry and Hermione both do not know the term Mudblood. Ron has to explain it to them.
Nearly Headless Nick has a Deathday Party and invited Harry.
Fred and George catch the rogue bludger after it goes after Harry during the game.
Snape pairs the trio with other students for the Dueling Club scene where Millicent and Hermione get into a physical fight. This is how she gets the hairs for her potion.
Gilderoy chose Neville not Ron for the duel when Snape interjects and recommends Draco.
Moaning Myrtle is much more comical in the book ... and a little more crazy.
Hermione spends a while in the infirmary and even gets a Get Well Soon card from Gilderoy.
Professor Binns doesn't exist in the movie. He is the one who explains the Chamber of Secrets, not McGonagall.
Ginny acts weird for a long time during the school year in the book due to the use of the diary. Percy has a much larger role in the book and especially so when it comes to how she is acting.
Hermione and Penelope Clearwater are both petrified at the same time in the book.
Harry puts on the Sorting Hat in the Chamber of Secrets and yells for help. Then the sword almost knocks him out.
Harry has Lucius throw his sock and Dobby catches it.
