Quick Review (Spoiler Free)

Wow... there was so much left out of the movie for this book. I really enjoyed this one and I’m so excited to continue on.

The older character transition in this book is really well done and I love the way the main trio really capture the emotional high points of the book. 10 / 10 recommend listening to the full cast versions of these books.

Now, let's get into the details!!

(Note: Some text may appear to be blocked out, just highlight that text to read it.)

Hermione's tirade about house elf equality, Winky's obnoxious behavior, and the absolute lack of a storyline for the Crouch family... I don't know how I didn't remember all of these things being taken out of the movie.

The story has so much more depth to it with all the things that were taken out. Also, they took Dobby out of almost all of his parts in the movie and gave them to others, which irritates me.

These books are so good. I can't believe it's been so long since I've read them. The full cast versions are so much better than I could have ever imagined them being. And the books are so funny, too!

Now let's recap the differences I found notable between the movie and the book:

  • Bill and Charlie Weasley definitely had less time in the movie than the books.

  • Ludo Bagman was omitted from the movie.

  • Bertha Jorkins was omitted from the movie.

  • Dobby was removed from a lot of plot points in the movie.

  • Dudley's character wasn't given the description from the book where he basically had a boxer's physique and was a massive bully to children.

  • The initial scene at the abandoned house in the movie was not fully explained (that it was Tom's childhood home, Frank's background as the caretaker, and that Barty wasn't actually present during this time).

  • Harry writes to Sirius frequently throughout the book and he shows up at the end and is allowed into the castle by Dumbledore.

  • The entire scene with the fireplace at the Dursley's and the Ton-Tongue Toffee incidient was omitted.

  • The Quidditch World Cup felt completely different in the book. The Weasley's had great seats, Winky was in the box by herself, Ludo Bagman was a prominent character, and we got backstory into the Veelas and leprechaun money.

  • The entire woods scene where the Dark Mark was cast was changed in the movie.

  • Percy working for the ministry is a big thing in the books and is mentioned multiple times.

  • The other wizard schools don't arrive on the first day like in the movie. It also discusses Fleur being part Veela.

  • Hagrid has a lot more creatures than are mentioned in the movie.

  • Draco's efforts to get Hagrid fired are played down significantly in the movie.

  • Hermione's entire S.P.E.W. storyline is omitted.

  • Moody actually puts the students under the Imperius Curse in the classroom to help them "fight it off".

  • In the book, Beauxbatons students include male and female where in the movie it is female only.

  • Ollivander inspects all the contestants wands before the games begin in the tournament.

  • In the book, Karkaroff and Maxime find out about the dragons with Hagrid.

  • Harry gets help from Hermione, Cedric, Dobby, and multiple offers from Ludo to pass the tasks in the tournament.

  • Rita Skeeter hearing private conversations and the reveal about her being an animagus are all omitted.

  • Moody being able to see through Invisibility Cloaks is omitted from the movie.

  • Dobby gives Harry the Gillyweed, not Neville.

  • Viktor gets attacked by Mr. Crouch when he shows back up near the woods at Hogwarts. Harry had gone to get Dumbledore and Crouch escaped.

  • The incidents of the maze are slightly different. Ex: Boggart as a Dementor, a sphinx, a giant spider. Viktor is still bewitched.

  • The Death Eaters are called out more in the book and Voldemort is more aggressive/angry with them.

  • Crouch Jr is given Veritaserum and interviewed, then left is McGonagall's watch, then killed by a Dementor when Cornelius Fudge shows up to see him.

  • Fudge and Dumbledore argue publicly in the hospital wing in front of the students, Bill, Charlie, and Molly Weasley.

  • Fred and George made a bet with Ludo, got leprechaun money as payment, confronted him, and then got Harry's 1000 galleon winning in the end.
